In 2016, Bass Lake overtopped the emergency spillway during the flooding caused by Hurricane Matthew. LJB provided a dam inspection and technical report of the observations and recommendations. While the dam components remained structurally sound after the flood event, the downstream channel had experienced significant damage. We assisted the Town in providing conceptual design and estimated construction cost information to FEMA, and the Town received funding to complete the channel improvements project.
This project includes a gabion wall to stabilize a portion of the streambank, a gabion structure to provide spillway protection, and a boulder/step pool sequence that traverses flood flows through the steep reach in a more controlled manner. It also includes construction of a trail base for the recreation trail that was damaged in the flood. LJB is also providing construction management services for the project.
